Connecting the PSION to the Net via PC's modem

These are some screenshots from an experiment I did, hooking up my Revo through the dock, and using the PC's internal modem to access the web through the Revo. I won't go into the details about setting it up because there's a website that shows you how to do this (that was mentioned at the November 2000 meeting):
http://www.geocities.com/psionkware/howto.html

I'll only discuss what I had to do beyond what was on that page, and my experiences with it.

First thing I had to do was load the internet software for the Revo...although the Revo has email software built-in, the internet browser is extra. For the Revo, the internet browser is on the PsiWin CD. From there I followed the instructions on the Kware website (link above).

In about 2 minutes I had the Revo connected to the internet. However as soon as I went to my first website I got an out of memory error on the Revo (I had less than half a meg free). After freeing up some memory I went to the
http://www.psion.com/ site and got a surprise. Instead of the normal PSION site you'd see in a standard Windows browser, PSION sent a lower bandwidth version of the website designed for the Series 5, http://www.psion.com/index_5.html

A picture of the Revo screen connected to the limited bandwidth PSION website.

A picture of the Revo screen of the same site zoomed in to show detail.

The limited bandwidth PSION site as seen on the Windows computer.

The Windows MochaPPP program with the PSION hooked up.

This program is mainly designed for Palms and WindowsCE. That's why the bytes transfered says "Palm" and it says I'm hooked up to a WindowsCE machine...as described in the instructions.

Anyway, this was an interesting and fun experiment but after doing this I deleted the software...personally I don't have any "real world" use for this as it requires my PC to be hooked up in order for the PSION to be hooked up and it's doubling the efforts to view the internet on a small screen and keyboard. It would be different if I was surfing on the road instead of in front of my multiple monitor Windows setup.
