| Reclaiming Lost Memory |
(Note: before following the advice on this page, backup beforehand in case anything goes wrong!) Reclaiming lost memory...no, nothing to do with short term memory (that's what the PSION is for). Sometimes when you run a program it may not close properly or the program wasn't written properly, and when you close the program it may not give back all of the memory it had used while the program was running. This is what's called a "memory leak" and a special program needs to be run to clean it up. One such program is called Freemem. Freemem reclaims all the unused segments, and defragments the memory (increasing performance). Reclaim is a slightly different program. Reclaim cleans up waste in specific in data files such as in Agenda and Data (EPOC 5 owners have to manually add Contacts) that is left behind when you delete entries. You can also compress Contacts (EPOC5), Data, and Agenda. To compress Contacts, have your Contacts program open, select: Menu > Tools > Contacts store info, and then tap Compress. I just did this now, and I freed up 11K of RAM. Nothing is lost though! To compress Data on older PSIONs (3/3a/3c/3mx/Siena), have your Data program open, select: Menu > File > Compress file To compress Agenda on older PSIONs (3/3a/3c/3mx/Siena), have your Agenda program open, select: Menu > File > Compress file There is no feature on EPOC5 to compress Data and Agenda for those machines.
